NHS staff urged to get 'fruity'
Nurses and other staff at an Essex PCT have been urged to set a healthy example to their patients this week and choose a fruity diet.
NHS North East Essex staff based in Colchester were encouraged to swap their chocolate and crisps snacks for a healthier fruit option as part of an initiative organised by the trust’s Health Trainers team.
The trainer’s role is to support the local population in modifying their lifestyle by making healthier choices, including appointing ‘workplace champions’ in local companies.
Alix Sheppard, health volunteer co-ordinator, said: “One of the easiest ways of improving your health is to switch to a healthier diet containing more fresh fruit and vegetables and that is why we are trying to encourage by leading be example.
“Twice a day this week, we offered pieces of fruit to our 450 staff at Colchester Primary Care Centre. By targeting the snacking habits of our own workforce we are hoping to lead by example encouraging other employers to take workforce health improvement initiatives more seriously,” she said.
