Nurses develop diabetes education resource

New RCN accredited resource to support nurse education in Type 2 diabetes therapy

Practice nurses now have access to an RCN accredited educational tool to help them in the treatment of people with Type 2 diabetes.

Nurse consultant at Worthing Hospital Sara Da Costa, who co-developed the educational content with Jill Hill, diabetes nurse consultant at Birmingham East and North PCT, says: “Nurses in both primary and secondary care have always played a key role in the overall management of diabetes and their contribution has had a major impact on the quality of patient care across the UK.

“Their role is especially important given that diabetes is increasingly prevalent. The T2D Zone toolkit provides an invaluable resource for nurses to guide evidence based treatment decision making in Type 2 diabetes.”

“As diabetes management becomes more sophisticated with a greater array of agents to select from and combine to help our patients reach their goals, it is beneficial to have access to resources that can support evidence-based medicine, especially resources that help us make the right choices for individual patients as one size does not necessarily fit all.”

Around 4.0% of the UK population (aged 20-79 year-olds) are thought to have diabetes, with 85% of these being Type 2 diabetes.
