A family meningitis scare has prompted community nurses Janet Lawrence and her sister Ann-Marie Watson to invent a device to help other families identify the disease.

Called Spotmate, the device features a curved bar to recreate the tumbler test and a magnifying lens to assist in self-examination.

It has been developed in association with the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust and has the backing of Meningitis UK.

The sisters have just signed a contract to market the device. 'It is a crucial part of any first aid kit,' said Ms Lawrence.
