A groundbreaking scheme that includes nurses providing home detoxification treatment to tackle long-term alcohol abuse is to be rolled out across the Huddersfield region.

As well as the home treatment and follow-up support, the scheme will provide an extra school liaison nurse and healthcare workers to provide the detoxification service in local GP surgeries. Clinical nurse specialist Tricia Robinson will help run the service, with alcohol liaison nurse Hazel Ramsden. So far 35 clients have received support this year, with 99% successfully completing the treatment.

Ms Ramsden said: 'Clients review their lifestyle and develop new coping strategies. We take a non-judgemental approach, and urge people to return if they relapse rather than leave it until the problem escalates.'
