An Essex trust has used its foundation status to offer nurses a one-year pay deal instead of the three-year deal agreed for the rest of the UK.

Staff at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust received the offer last month, after months of negotiations. The trust had tried to push through a 2% offer.

Nurses in bands 5–9 stand to receive 2.75%, in line with the nationally agreed deal but will not be tied in to smaller rises in the following two years. Staff in the lowest bands also stand to gain more than they would on Agenda for Change.

Nick Bradley, Unison regional officer, said: 'It is a very interesting offer. We and other local trade unions are considering it and will be going back to further negotiations on 17 July.'
