A NURSE academic at the University of Hull has been awarded a £90,000 research scholarship in recognition of her work in wound care.

Julie Santy, a senior lecturer in the faculty of health and social care, received the money from Smith & Nephew to fund a three-year PhD on infections due to external fixators used to treat broken bones and limb deformities.

Ms Santy plans to create an assessment tool to see quickly when wounds are infected.

'I am delighted to have won this award,' she said. 'I can focus on solving some of the problems that patients with external fixators have.'
