Prescribing consultation launched

The Scottish government has launched a consultation on developing nurse prescribing over the next 10 years.

It was prompted by an unpublished University of Stirling review, which blamed health boards for a lack of coherence in the way non-medical prescribing had been implemented.

Recommendations in the consultation paper include introducing senior nurse leaders to all boards at both strategic and operational levels to give prescribing local direction.

Theresa Fyffe, director of RCN Scotland, said: 'We will be talking to our members about this but it is really encouraging to see they are suggesting leaders. Nurses just want to prescribe and it's not their battle to fight the infrastructure to do that, so we would encourage anything that makes prescribing happen.'
