And I completely agree with Janice that we need to use creative teaching like roleplay to help prepare students to cope with situations to allow their compassion instead of fear/lack of confidence to inform practice.

Compassion cannot be taught, but it can be unlocked. You cannot teach compassion, you can only teach students the importance of compassion and how best to allow compassion to inform your practice. You learn how best to show and use your compassion, not compassion itself. It can also be locked up again by poor working environments and stress.

Lovely blog entry. Personally, I'm a bit of a special case. My father is a GP and my mother is a nurse, so the average dinner time conversation for us was a debate on this or that healthcare issue; which was always a burden on my sister who has since persued careers outside of the healthcare profession haha! I completely agree that most student nurses are up for a discussion, and I've been so lucky to have mentors who are willing to discuss nursing issues with me too. "Is it appropriate for Mr B to get a catheter?", "Mrs S has AF, but her arthritis pain is very bad. Since NSAIDs are contra-indicated, what shall we do?". In fact, I would say that these kinds of discussions are aiding my learning a great deal.

  • Comment on: Degree nurses 'not too posh to wash', says Willis Commission

    Aaron Rudd's comment 14-Aug-2012 3:02 pm

I'm a degree nursing student, and I can honestly say I am not too posh to wash. Some nurses I've met do avoid the personal care, leaving it to the HCAs. However I see personal care as a inseparable part of nursing; its an opportunity to assess the patient physically and mentally as well as demonstrate your compassion and respect to their dignity by making personal care as painless as possible and it's also an opportunity to build relationships. e.g. the chats I've had while shaving gentlemen who are having issues with hand control have been very cathartic for them and insightful for me. Many nurses I've met have been very hands on and have been brilliant role models to emmulate on this subject. I don't think it's very fair to paint all degree nurses with the same brush; nor is it fair to fracture the profession like this because we're all part of the same team.
