Government due to announce nurses' pay rise

An announcement from the government on nurses' pay is imminent, Nursing Times has learned.

The NHS Pay Review Body (PRB), the independent body that makes a recommendation for the pay rise due to most non-medical staff, finally submitted its report to government after weeks of delays.

It is custom for the pay rise to be announced in the House of Commons in response to a parliamentary question, within a few weeks of the report being submitted.

Parliament is currently in recess until 21 April, making an announcement likely towards the end of the month.

A separate pay review body for doctors and dentists has already submitted its recommendations, although the government has not yet announced the report's findings.

The government is not bound legally to follow the recommendations of the PRB. Last year the then chancellor Gordon Brown decided to stage the 2.5% recommended by the PRB, sparking threats of industrial action from nurses.

Year in year out nurses are short changed by this government, maybe it's time for a change.It would be un wise to accept the three year deal. It.s about time that those in the caring profession took care of themselves!

I think we have to think very carefully about a three year deal that will not match inflation at all and rising living costs that may well see us past a change of government as well, with the numbers of nurses leaving increasing and new recruits falling it may not be long before we are living to regret this not long after it is imposed, stick with 2.75 % this year and negotiate annually, a three year deal has to be more attractive than this to make me fall for it!

I WOULD HOPE THE GOVERNMENT WOULD REALISE THAT ALL NURSING STAFF MAKE AN EFFORT TO CARE FOR ALL PEOPLE DURING THEIR TIME OF SICKNESS AND PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE TO DEAL WITH LIFE OR DEATH SITUATIONS ARE BEING PAID OVER AND ABOVE THEIR LIVING REQUIREMENTS I.E POLITICIANS WHO CAN CLAIM FOR HOUSING ALLOWANCE AND THEY DON'T HAVE A MORTGAGE OR THOSE WHO CAN CLAIM FOR THEIR WIVES TAXI FARES TO GO SHOPPING WHERE IS THE LOGIC IN THAT.
