Acute sector: Princess Anne opens new cancer centre

A major new cancer centre in Yorkshire was opened by HRH Princess Anne at an official opening ceremony this month.
The St James's Institute of Oncology in the new Bexley Wing at St James's University Hospital in Leeds was completed just before Christmas, costing £220m. With state-of-the-art facilities, 1,600 staff and 350 inpatient beds, it is one of the largest specialist cancer treatment centres in Europe.
Princess Anne has a personal link with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, having visited Cookridge Hospital previously and opened Wharfedale Hospital in 2005.
Martin Buckley, chairperson of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: 'This cancer centre has long been an aspiration of doctors, nurses and everyone involved in the health service across the country.
'Staff now have the opportunity to bring many city's many cancer services together in one building for the first time, greatly enhancing ways of working together and allowing access to the very latest technology for both treatment and research,' he said.
