A new referral system has been introduced to cut nurses' paperwork and improve access for diabetes patients.
The new intranet referral form has been introduced in the four hospitals run by the Pennine Acute Trust in Bury and North Manchester. The hospitals, which previously used email, telephone and fax, now all have the same system to follow.
The system covers inpatients that are referred by staff to the specialist services and has been introduced with the aim of streamlining the system. The project has been lead by the specialist diabetes nurses at the trust, and supported by other staff.
Janet Wild, a diabetes nurse based at North Manchester General Hospital, said: 'The referrals have already started coming through and the early signs are encouraging. As nursing staff become more aware of the new system, we hope it will improve the promptness of referrals, therefore preventing delays in discharge and prolonged lengths of stay for patients.'
