The National Audit Office is to survey acute sector nurses to gain a front-line perspective on the battle against healthcare associated infections such as MRSA.
The survey asks nurses to rate their trust on safety and infection control, and includes questions on leadership, access to and analysis of data, managerial action on reported incidents, trust policies, cleaners, hand hygiene and training needs.
Since the NAO's last survey on this topic in 2004, the Department of Health has introduced a range of measures to tackle healthcare associated infections, including guidance, initiatives, improvement teams, surveillance and regulation, targets and sanctions.
'Despite these efforts, healthcare associated infections remain a serious problem, and many of the issues highlighted in our previous reports are still relevant,' says the NAO.
The survey is open until November 28. Results will feed into a report due for publication in Spring 2009.
