Nurses call for better pay

Nurses and other health workers today called for a better pay deal, claiming the NHS is heading for another recruitment crisis.

Unions including Unison and the RCN have joined forces to call for talks to be reopened over the 7.99% three-year pay deal for nurses.

They have produced joint evidence to the NHS Pay Review Body to argue for further talks with the government to improve the deal.

Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive & General Secretary of the RCN, said: 'The current economic crisis is compounded by the fact that we have an ageing NHS workforce and increasing numbers of students dropping out of their courses. All this points to a recruitment and retention crisis right around the corner.'

There are already the signs of a recruitment crisis. The number of applicants to the nursing course at our local provider is down for the next intake. Add this to the increase in movement to jobs in the Community and there is a crisis in the future.
We are looking towards an all-degree profession - and this will lead to further problems unless appropriate money follows it.
