Nursing Times clinical editor Kathryn Godfrey on developments in palliative care

I was heartened this week to see that elements of the end-of-life strategy are being implemented, then I saw the story about district nurses benefitting from palliative care training.

Not surprisingly, it was nurseswithout district nursing qualifications and those who had never worked in specialist palliative care who took most from the programme.

The strategy, which we featured in a clinical update when it came out in the summer, emphasised the need for end-of-life care training to be embedded in nurse training at all stages.

District nurses are a key group as an Audit Commission report shows that palliative care takes up 40% of district nurses time.
