Measures on how well trusts provide post-registration training for nurses and other healthcare staff are to be introduced under latest government proposals on workforce quality.

'Metrics for access, quality and expenditure' will be set for NHS organisations, which over time will be reported, benchmarked and made available to the rest of the health service and also the public, the government said.

The move, which is contained within the workforce quality section of the NHS Next Stage Review, published today by the Department of Health, means nurses will now be able to see for themselves how well a trust is performing on continuing professional development.

'We will improve transparency, promote fairness and reward quality in education and training,' the report said.

It follows NT's successful Time Out For Training campaign, which has been calling for protected time and budgets for post-registration training over the last six months.
