You should have. Most nursing is generic; pain, wound-care etc...it doesnt matter how old they are. The appointed child nurse should be able to give you info specific to caring for children ie obs. You must have learnt some basic stuff in your training ie family centered care and all staff should attend child protection training regardless of branch. I have worked in a recovery where there was one child nurse and obviously she wasnt there all the time. You may just need to gain experience with children to gain confidence.

For your & the patient's safety, you should talk to your senior children's nurse in your Trust or if there isn't one contact Fiona Smith at the RCN.
There are rules about this sort of situation & you need to know that you are doing things the correct way.
Read the reports that have come out over the last few years ie Bristol etc to understand why.
