The DH is looking at measures to prevent people from taking up smoking and encourage smokers to quit.

A consultation document, The Future of Tobacco Control, includes ideas such as plain cigarette packets with no branding or logos and a minimium pack size of 20 to stop young people with limited spending power from buying 10 cigarettes at a time.

Other suggestions include:

  • restricting access to cigarette vending machines by young people;

  • restricting the display of tobacco products in shops;

  • banning the advertising of smoking related products such as cigarette papers.

The four main consultation themes of the consultation are:

  • protecting children and young people from smoking;

  • reducing smoking rates and health inequalities caused by smoking;

  • helping smokers to quit;

  • helping those who cannot quit.

The closing dates for comments on the consultation is 8 September 2008.
