Clumsy childhood linked to obesity

Poor physical control and coordination in childhood are linked to an increased risk of obesity in later life, say researchers online in the BMJ.

The findings are based on 11,042 UK subjects taking part in the ongoing National Child Development Study that began in 1958. Obese adults were more likely to have had poor hand control, poor coordination and clumsiness as seven-year-olds than other children.

Ellen Mason, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: 'Making sure that all children can enjoy physical activity, regardless of their coordination skills, is critical in reducing the risk of becoming overweight as they grow up.'
