Nurses to research domestic abuse in older women

Older women who have suffered from domestic violence will be asked about their experiences by University of Nottingham researchers.

As part of a year-long project, the university's school of nursing will interview up to 40 women over the age of 65 who have been in an abusive relationship.

Their responses will help create an online resource for healthcare professionals on how to effectively identify and support older patients who may be victims of abuse at home or have suffered at the hands of their partner in the past.

Dr Julie McGarry, director of the study, hopes to give a voice to a group that has often been a silent section of society.

She said: 'Most domestic surveys tend to exclude women over the age of 59, further compounding the view that domestic violence only affects younger women and effectively excluding or ignoring the experiences of older women.'
