Nurses urged to wash hands to prevent norovirus spreading

The Health Protection Agency has stressed the importance of handwashing following signs that cases of the winter vomiting bug norovirus are on the rise.

The announcement coincided this week with the first ever Global Handwashing Day, which is supported by UNICEF and the World Bank, among others.

Professor Mike Catchpole, director of the HPA's centre for infections, said that their monitoring of cases suggested that the annual norovirus season is now underway.

'Norovirus is highly infectious and easily spread in settings where people are in close contact with one another so good hygiene, including frequent handwashing, is really important.'
