Statins reduce pneumonia death risk

Patients who take statins before being hospitalised with pneumonia are less likely to die of pneumonia within 90 days, a study has shown.

Danish researchers reviewed data from 29,900 adults hospitalised between 1997 and 2004 and found the 90-day death rate among 1,371 patients taking statins was 16.8%, compared with 22.4% who were not taking the drugs.

Report author Reimar W Thomsen said: 'Given the availability of statins, with their relatively low cost and mild adverse effects, positive results of statin therapy trials in patients with pneumonia would have substantial clinical and public health implications.'
