MHRA issues alert over emergency resuscitator bags

Staff should identify and quarantine relevant manual resuscitator bags

A device alert has been issued by the MHRA for immediate attention

Nurses should check single-use self inflating resuscitator bags, also known as bag-valve-masks, manufactured by Marshall Products, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has warned.

The bags are intended for emergency resuscitation yet some cannot be connected to standard airway devices such as endotracheal tubes or laryngeal masks, the MHRA said in an alert.

The warning applies to devices designed for both paediatric and adult patients. Affected lot numbers are L000028, L000088, L080401 to L080419 and L080526 to L080543.

The alert states: 'The device's 15mm outlet connector is manufactured to a British and European standard. The manufacturer reports the connector dimensions are at the outer limit of the standard requirements, therefore there may be difficulties in attaching them onto other airway devices.'

Staff should identify any relevant devices and quarantine them, the MHRA said.
