National Patient Safety Agency isse an alert on mental health resus

The National Patient Safety Agency last week issued a 'rapid response' alert on patient resuscitation in mental and learning disability settings.

The alert from the National Patient Safety Agency follows a review of incidents involving mental health patients choking or experiencing cardiac or respiratory arrest.

Between January 2006 and March 2008, the National Patient Safety Agency received reports of 26 incidents where staff were not able to manage arrest, or where basic resuscitation equipment was not available. There were 25 reported cases of staff being unable to deliver first aid when patients were choking, three of which resulted in death.
