  • Comment on: Does sunlight affect breast cancer risk?

    Edward Hutchinson's comment 4-Jul-2011 9:30 am

The evolutionary process resulted in early humans with palest skin surviving better further from the equator while living mainly outdoors with little clothing. Unfortunately modern diets and lifestyles have led to many people becoming maladapted to the latitude appropriate for their skin tone. It is possible to restore the ability of your skin to cope with UV exposure. In the HealthyFellow blog "Natural Sunscreen Options" there are some simple evidence based ideas that over time enable longer, safer UV exposure. We should remember early humans would have eaten only omega 3 rich organic free range meat/game/fish so would naturally have had a higher anti-inflammatory omega 3 status and lower pro-inflammatory omega 6. We can restore omega 3 status and improve the ability of our skin to resolve inflammation. Being outside in bright sunlight doesn't just alter our Vitamin D level but also resets our circadian rhythm. Having no/little light from dusk to dawn, early humans melatonin secretion would have been high. Melatonin is an iron chelator. It is the iron released from inflamed skin cells that induces cancer cell formation. See "Skin protection against UVA-induced iron damage by multiantioxidants and iron chelating drugs/prodrugs" Improving the natural creation of the anti-inflammatory anti-oxidants Vitamin D and melatonin not only increases our ability to survive cancer but also increases our ability to detoxify the brain. Inflammation, oxidation, glycation and stress are the processes driving the ageing process. We ignore the fact that our human DNA is set to create Vitamin D3 from dawn to dusk and melatonin from dusk to dawn at our peril.

Healthy Start women's vitamin tablets The daily dose is one tablet which contains: 70 milligrams of vitamin C 10 micrograms of vitamin D3 400 micrograms of folic acid 10mcg Vitamin D3=400iu "Circulating 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels in Fully Breastfed Infants on Oral Vitamin D Supplementation" free full text online. The evidence shows at latitude 32N 4000iu/daily/D3 met the mothers daily needs. 6400iu/daily was required during lactation to enable breast milk to flow vitamin D replete. 400iu/daily was ideal for a one month old baby. Wales is Latitude 52N so who thinks that using a tenth of the amount required at latitude 32N where it is sunnier and warmer and UVB from sunlight is available everyday of the year? This isn't a serious attempt to correct vitamin D deficiency.

  • Comment on: High vitamin D levels cut heart disease and diabetes risk

    Edward Hutchinson's comment 14-Mar-2010 10:35 pm

From September through to March it's simply impossible to obtain vitamin D3 from sunlight in the UK for the simple reason insufficient UVB reaches the ground. Similarly people living in urban environments make less vitamin D because the ozone pollution of urban atmosphere absorbs the UVB so less reaches ground level. Because UVA radiation degrades Vitamin D and is reflected from hard surfaces people living in towns NOT ONLY make less Vit D3 they also find it degrades faster in their bodies. Town dwellers have lower 25(OH)D status than rural folk despite or perhaps because they are getting more UV exposure but less UVB. Diet at best can only provide 10% of our daily Vitamin D needs. The rest for city folk has to come from sunbed or supplement use. The alternative is a higher rate of chronic illness.

http://tinyurl.com/yhay5k8 Meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies evaluating the association of saturated fat with cardiovascular disease I'm surprised that any doctor so out of touch with the latest science showing there is no evidence supporting the claim that saturated fat is linked to heart disease is allowed to continue in practice. If health professionals were aware of how the general public are laughing at their stupidity on this issue they may take some action to apply some common sense. Here are just a few examples. If health professionals don't take account of the current state of scientific evidence then they will be regarded with the same contempt as doctors. http://www.fathead-movie.com/index.php/2010/01/21/from-a-sows-ear/ http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/?p=7026 http://freetheanimal.com/2010/01/saturated-fat-and-coronary-heart-disease-part-v-the-science.html http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2010/01/krausss-new-article-on-saturated-fat.html
