First swine flu death reported in United States

The first swine flu death outside Mexico has been confirmed by the US government, according to reports.

According to the Reuters news agency, a 23 month old child from Texas died from the H1N1 influenza A virus. So far there have been 65 cases of swine flu in the US, most of them mild.

Meanwhile, Germany became the eighth country to report cases of swine flu after its infectious diseases agency found the virus in three people who had recently returned from Mexico.

A man and a woman in their late 30s in Bavaria and a 22 year-old woman in Hamburg have tested positive.

The World Health Organisation may raise its pandemic alert level to five if it is confirmed that infected people in more than two countries are consistently spreading the disease.
