Make 2010 your best year yet!

Nursing Times’ resident Happy Nurse Claire Westwood on making the most of 2010

We are now into a new year and a new decade, so how are things looking for you?

You may be delighted with how your life is and how things are going, but I work with many nurses for whom that is not the case, so what can you do about your own life?

The first step is to realise that often there ARE things you can do, steps you can take and that something new will happen when you do something different. We all have many habits, and we need many of them to keep our lives on track, but some of our habits are unhelpful and can keep us ‘stuck’ in our lives, when what we want to do is move forward in some way.

Take time to look at your habits – what do you do daily, weekly and monthly. Be aware of how you speak to people, including how you speak to yourself and what results you get from your current habits.

Then start to notice people who are getting different results to you, and how they do it. Do you know someone who seems to deal with stress better than you? Perhaps you work with a nurse that manages her team efficiently or envy someone with a wonderful relationship?

We can all learn from observing others to give us the inspiration to change our own lives.

If you want 2010 to be different, you have to start doing something different. This may be stepping outside what you normally do to meet new people, look for a new job or take time out to relax so you feel more positive about meeting a new partner.

I was coaching one of my clients recently and after a few weeks coaching she has prioritised what she wants from this year. She realised that the most important thing for her is to relocate from the city she is in to somewhere smaller, nearer the coast with a new job as well. She has created a plan to start the process and is taking small steps to move forward.

To do the same thing yourself:

  • Look at where you are now.
  • Think about what is really important to you in your life. When you get to the end of 2010 what would you love to have done/seen/experienced?
  • Set a goal for the end of this year in your most important life area.
  • Start to take small consistent steps towards that goal and review where you are each week – all big changes take place a tiny bit at a time.
  • You may well have doubts and fears so find out how to overcome some of them, link with a buddy or coach to keep you on track.
  • Even if life is not how you want it right now, be grateful for everything you have. This will make you feel more positive.

  • Many thanks for this Claire. I wished i had seen this earlier. However it's still not too late to make a move. i have been thinking of moving to New Zealand lately and i just needed some motivation. I think now i have made up my mind. This is really good.
