Education body elects leading cancer nurse as new chair

The Council of Deans of Health has elected Professor Jessica Corner, dean of health sciences at the University of Southampton as its new chair.

Elected by the council’s membership, Professor Corner will serve a three-year term.

She replaces Professor Ieuan Ellis, whose background is in physiotherapy.

The announcement of the appointment comes just days after Professor Corner was included in the 2014 Queen’s Birthday honours. She is to be made a Dame.

Speaking after her election, Professor Corner said: “The contribution of UK universities to building knowledge, innovation and preparing health professionals for the health system is immense.

“I am proud to be taking on the role of chair of the Council of Deans of Health as we continue to advance this unique and vital work.”

Professor Ellis said: ”Jessica is a truly outstanding leader in health and academia.”

He added: “Under Jessica’s leadership, I am confident that the Council will continue to go from strength to strength, representing members across the UK and contributing proactively to innovation in health and social care.”
