Leading cancer hospital suspends chief exec

A former midwife has been suspended from her post as chief executive of a world-renowned cancer trust in Manchester, it has emerged.

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust confirmed in a statement today that it had suspended Caroline Shaw on Thursday over a disciplinary matter.

Ms Shaw received a CBE from the Queen earlier this year and was tipped as being one of four people in the running to become the new chief nursing officer for England in March 2012 – the job that subsequently went to Jane Cummings.

The suspension was described as a “shock” by local newspapers, which reported staff at the trust had been “stunned” by the move.

Appointed in 2005, Ms Shaw has been credited with transforming The Christie into a highly successful organisation and turning round its finances.

This included leading a successful campaign by the trust in 2009 for the return of £6.5m wiped from its supporting charity, the Christie Charity, during the Icelandic banking crisis.

Ms Shaw has worked in the NHS for 25 years, originally as a nurse and then a midwife, before moving into management roles.

Prior to her arrival at the Christie, she was deputy chief executive and director of operations at South Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

In a statement from the Christie, its chair Lord Keith Bradley said: “Caroline Shaw, chief executive of the trust, was suspended yesterday while investigations are underway as part of a disciplinary process.

“This is neutral action and follows the Trust’s normal processes.”

He added: “We have put arrangements in place to ensure both the trust’s and charity’s activities continue to be delivered to the very highest standards, and I would like to reassure patients, families and carers that this situation in no way affects or compromises patient care.”

  • I so wish they wouldn't describe it as a neutral action. It is anything but, and destroys people.
    It must be a very serious allegation to take this drastic and last resort step for someone who was so highly regarded. No smoke without fire.

    Why bother waiting for the facts, eh? I would have expected better from you.

  • They could have perhaps given leave of absence during investigations. I am aware of Senior nurses who have not suspended or kept in post nurses who have alcohol abuse and mis-appropriation of drugs in the working environment, or fraudulent entries in records, which to me is a very serious offence, and have not been reported to NMC
