Leading NMC council member to step down

Professor Judith Ellis has announced her intention to step down as a member of the nursing regulator’s ruling council on 30 June.

Professor Ellis has been a member of council since January 2009 and was the interim chair of council for six months, from April 2012 to September 2012.

She was credited with helping lead the Nursing and Midwifery Council through its latest crisis, following the loss in short succession of its then chair, Tony Hazell, and chief executive, Dickon Weir-Hughes, during early 2012.

She was also the only previous council member to survive a major overhaul of the body in May last year.

As well as her role with the NMC, Professor Ellis is executive dean of the faculty of health and social care at London Southbank University and was awarded an MBE in 1998 for services to paediatrics.

“It has been an honour to be a registrant member of the council”

Professor Ellis said: “It has been an honour to be a registrant member of the council and I have valued the opportunity I have had to play a part in strengthening the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s role in public protection.”

Current NMC chair Mark Addison said: “I would like to thank Judith for the time she spent as a member of the council.

“Her valuable skills and experience helped the council to navigate a period of significant change and she has provided continuity and stability in the NMC’s leadership. She will leave a council that has its feet firmly under the table.

“I wish her all the best for her future endeavours,” he added.

Mr Addison himself will be stepping down as chair at the end of his term in December 2014. He was appointed in July 2012 for an initial term of 18 months.

Recruitment for his replacement will begin shortly, followed by recruitment for a member of council to replace Professor Ellis, the regulator said.

The council, which is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the NMC, is currently made up of six lay and six registrant members, including one from each of the four UK countries.
