Payroll problems continue for nurses in Northern Ireland

Some nurses in Northern Ireland did not get paid at all last month due to ongoing problems with a new payroll system, Nursing Times has learned.

Last month Nursing Times reported around 7,000 staff employed by Health and Social Care trusts had been incorrectly paid following the introduction of the new system almost six months ago.

The Royal College of Nursing said hundreds of nurses were are still reporting errors in their pay packets at the end of May and warned problems looked set to continue into next month and would affect pay packets issued at the end of June.

“We haven’t had the same volume of people affected in May but it is still a significant number in the hundreds,” said Garrett Martin, deputy director of the RCN in Northern Ireland.

“We have a couple of examples of nurses who have not received any pay,” he warned.

Mr Martin said there were ongoing issues with travel expenses not being paid and timesheets for unsocial hours payments not being processed

He said: “We know of one ward in one hospital where the majority of nursing staff have not received their unsocial hours payments. For some that’s a considerable amount of money – £500, £600, £700 less than they were expecting.”

The RCN and other unions are working with trust HR directors and the government to resolve the situation.

Mr Martin said: “I do have some sympathy for frontline payroll staff who are under considerable pressure to deal with a situation that is not of their own making. However, we are not confident we are through this and that it will be resolved by next week or even next month.”

  • Good old ESR, I presume?

    This has happened every time ESR has been introduced: according to my payroll sources it is pretty much in the nature of the system, which is an adapted database system. However, when up and running said sources also tell me it is waaaay better than what went before.

    The timesheet issue, unfortunately, doesn't always go away, as it is frequently nothing to do with payroll, rather to do with those who should be completing them...

    Nice that the RCN rep does stick up for payroll staff, though.
