Poll suggests public 'know nurses work hard'

Most people acknowledge that nurses are caring and hard working in the face of challenging conditions, research has shown.

A poll by YouGov revealed that 76% of those asked think nurses do their best and care about their patients.

However, 82% of the 1,968 people surveyed also said nurses should be given the chance to speak more freely, with only 14% believing that this is already the case.

The situation reveals a gap that nursing organisation Britain’s Nurses will be looking to plug following its launch at an event hosted by former secretary of state for health, Baroness Bottomley.

The independent body, run by nurses for nurses, has been created to celebrate the profession and give nurses a voice.

It will provide a platform for the 700,000 nurses operating in the UK to express their opinions and enter into debates with their peers, share ideas and best practice.

The organisation’s website, www.britainsnurses.co.uk, also presents an opportunity for nurses to network online, allowing them to develop social contacts as well as professional ones.

Virginia Bottomley, Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone, said she has been a keen supporter of the initiative since its early stages.

She is looking forward to seeing it play an important role in supporting, promoting and maintaining Britain’s high-quality nursing workforce.
