Ms Dunn, a nurse for over 30 years, trained as a general nurse and worked in a range of clinical, management and academic roles.

More recently, she worked for five years as a director of nursing for South Tyneside Primary Care Trust and as the operational manager for the RCN Northern Region.

Tom Sandford, RCN executive director for England, said: “With a lifelong background in nursing, spanning the independent sector and NHS, Estephanie’s knowledge of the challenges facing both nurses and health care assistants is second to none.

“She has been a vocal champion for the nursing profession throughout her career, and has a particularly astute understanding of the current structural, financial and political challenges facing the NHS and the independent sectors more widely,” he said.

“I know that she will be a fearless champion for the profession and for high quality health care, in her new role as the RCN’s North West regional director,” he added.

She will formally take over the position on 22 August from the current incumbent Steve Flanagan.

  • Are the issues in the north-west any different to those in the Midlands or the south? No, so why the need for regional directors. Wasteful RCN.
