Publication date of Francis report on Mid Staffs revealed
Robert Francis QC has revealed his report on the Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust public inquiry will be published on 6 February.
In a press notice issued this afternoon, Mr Francis said he would share the document with health secretary Jeremy Hunt the day before publication.
The inquiry’s remit was to consider the regulatory and supervisory systems surrounding the Midlands trust between 2005 and 2009 to identify why poor care went undiscovered for so long.
The report is expected to be critical of the culture of the health service during that period and make far reaching recommendations on improving regulation, patient safety and quality of care.
Mr Francis said: “Following discussions with the secretary of state for health, at his request I have agreed to hand my final report to him on 5 February 2013. I will then publish it on Wednesday 6 February shortly ahead of the report being laid before Parliament that day.
“I am making this information publicly available, so that core participants, witnesses and those following the inquiry are aware of its next steps.”
The announcement ends weeks of speculation about the most likely date for publication.
Publication of the report will come more than two and a half years after the public inquiry was announced by then health secretary Andrew Lansley in June 2010.
