“Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the staff member involved”
Gloucestershire Police said a man in his 60s had been arrested on suspicion of murder and was being held in custody.
Wotton Lawn is an 88-bed acute mental health hospital with four wards, a nurse-led psychiatric unit and low secure unit.
A spokeswoman for the trust said she could not confirm the role of the staff member at this time, but it has been reported by the local press that she was a “care assistant”.
The victim was attacked at about 7.30am and was attended by colleagues before being taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital where she died from her injuries about an hour later.
“A tragic event took place at one of our inpatient units in Gloucester yesterday morning,” said a statement released by the trust.
“During the incident a colleague was stabbed and after being attended by fellow clinicians was taken to Gloucester Royal Hospital.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm our colleague died a short time later. Our thoughts remain with their family and friends at this extremely difficult time,” the trust said.
“The full facts of this incident are still being established and therefore it is inappropriate for us to comment further at this time,” the statement added.
People have paid tribute to the NHS worker, described as “a lovely lady” by friends on Facebook and Twitter.
Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “The events in Gloucestershire are devastating and our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the staff member involved.”
