  • Comment on: Hospital suspends staff following BBC Panorama investigation

    Magdalene Porteous's comment 1-Jun-2011 11:22 pm

What is wrong with our society - why can't people self regulate, and if they can't then they certainly should not be in the Caring profession. The registered nurse [who is regulated] stood by with a smile on his face and watched the barbaric treatment of a young girl - he was guilty of abuse by neglect and should be struck off the register. I know it is extreme and there will be some regulation or breach of human rights which prevents it but...... would CCTV in the homes be the only answer?? Very few would dare to behave in that brutal manner if they thought they were being filmed - it would clear out the lazy staff as well as the brutes and only the truly caring staff [of which there are many] would remain. Thank goodness for the nurse who reported the abuse within the home and exposed the CQC for what it is - dangerously inadequate.

  • Comment on: Nurses lack skills to treat self-harm

    Magdalene Porteous's comment 4-Oct-2010 9:52 pm

"Research shows that people who self harm had a predominately negative view of their treatment, due to the ATTITUDE of Healthcare professionals". The comment from Anon 10.47 simply, but sadly proves this research to be true. On reading the somewhat smug comment " I took the wind out of her sails". The RMN has completely forgotten that the comment refers to a vulnerable Service User who had the courage to stand up and share her experience. Did you really take the wind out of her sails? I doubt it. In reality what you did was reinforce exactly what the research shows. However, what is even more concerning is that you are willing to admit that you believe that you have the right to judge who should be treated in A&E. If you ever worked in A&E, which I doubt very much, you would know that there is little or no time to categorise the patients into the group you decide has the right to be treated and the group who you clearly slot into "Time Wasting Groups". It would do you good to remember that regardless of your opinion you have a Duty of Care but more importantly you are discussing vulnerable human beings. After such comments I too would question that are you worthy of your registration. Whilst you believe that you "SEEMED" to get a lot of support from your colleagues at the conference I would pray that you are somewhat deluded. Since you seem to have all the answers, perhaps you could explain where you are going to find the resources to implement -a Crisis Intervention Team and/or a permanent RMN presence in every A&E in the country. It is due to attitudes similar to yours that I have reluctantly taken early retirement. I refuse to be associated with members of the nursing profession who are openly discriminatory and therefore fail in their Duty of Care.

  • Comment on: Whistleblowing nurses launch appeal

    Magdalene Porteous's comment 23-Aug-2010 6:18 pm

It is very noble act to become a Whistleblower, but unfortunately, as the three nurses found out to their cost it is rarely without repercussions for those of us who feel very strongly that we have a "duty of care" to the public and take our position as public servants seriously. After following the correct procedure and reporting the manager and senior nurse [seconded from the NHS]for alleged abuse of a vulnerable service user, I and the others involved in the disclosure were completely shocked to told by the Director of the private company who funded/run the unit, that we were nothing but troublemakers and that if we did not like the way the unit was run then we should GET OUT. From that moment on we were vicitmised, followed in the workplace, our conversations listened into and reported back to the Director. Eventually we were hounded out. I was left with no option but to resign and then started proceedings against the company for Constructive Dismissal. While continuing to accuse me of lying and troublemaking, they eventually settled out of court. I was fortunate that my case was settled without a need for a tribunal -and that was nerve -racking enough. Therefore, I have nothing but admiration for the three nurses who are appealing against certain aspects of their tribunal's ruling - Good on you all and good luck! At the very least you will be setting a legal precedent on the lengths that employers can go to avoid the employee being discriminated against when they blow the whistle, and hopefully remind employers that they must have a "duty of care" to whistleblowers.

  • Comment on: NMC behind on fitness cases

    Magdalene Porteous's comment 29-Jun-2010 10:21 pm

The NMC claim to have set ambitious targets, but does not want the quality of the work to suffer - WHAT WORK AND TO WHICH LEVEL OF "QUALITY" DO THEY REFER? As it stands their appalling lack of action strongly indicates that their investigating practices are at the lowest level of quality possible.

  • Comment on: NMC will not take action against Basildon nurses

    Magdalene Porteous's comment 17-Mar-2010 10:51 am

Thank goodness there are a few like -minded nurses who agree that the NMC are "Not fit for Practice". Your comments -as above, have spurred me on to register my utter disgust at the failure of the NMC to take action against those responsible for what can only be described as an appalling lack of care. The evidence of filth, and dirt on beds, floors, curtains, the A&E equipment which had definitely not been checked along with the obvious poor leadership, makes me so ashamed to admit that I belong to the nursing profession. For goodness sake how bad does it have to be before the NMC will carry out a thorough investigation and then act upon their findings?
