Thanks heaps for all your support - all the nurses at Christchurch Hospital and other health agencies are beginning to get pretty fatigued especially when we all finish shifts and then head home to stressed families and friends. The wonderful messages do help us all get through the day! The GP practices and after hours clinics have all been doing a stunning job and we are all very proud of each other. Kia Kaha - Stand tall.

In Christchurch we have Hospital Aide Specialling rooms. This is where at risk patients are co-located in a multi-bed room (most our rooms are multi bed anyway) where 1 or 2 aides constantly monitor the patients. The aides can also assist with cares as long as there is one aide who is contantly supervising the others in the room. Although, having so many at risk patients in one area can be a bit tough on the staff, a good sense of humour helps heaps! Any the cost of the staff compated to a fractured NOF from a fall = overall savings from prevention!

Here in NZ we are trying to encourage the use of public transport. It is cheaper and reduces overall congestion on the roads. The hospital has a shuttle van that runs between our main facilities hourly, and there are several car parking facilities both council and privately owned for those that need to take vehicles. I bike. The cost of parking, especially in an inner city hospital is huge, and there is almost an expectation by ratepayers for huge carparking buildings to be built and offered for no cost to staff or patients - let alone visitors. In the redevelopment plan that the hospital in ChCh is undertaking the emphasis is on pedestrian access and drop off areas, and of course the bus stop right outside the front door. I think that is a smart move!

Hmm I can't remember the last time caps were worn in NZ. We usually have polo shirts and trousers/shorts for our undergraduate nursing students.

Good grief - that is shocking!! Health is a service and not a market product. I would hate to see what organisation "nurses for reform" is and their goals. Lets hope this idea never sees the light of day!!
