Care home services have been rated for the first time by the Commission for Social Care Inspection.

All local care services have been rated excellent, good, adequate or poor against a new set of ratings ranging from zero to three stars.  A three-star rating means care services are excellent while a zero star indicates a poor rating.

The latest figures show that 70% of care service providers have achieved an 'excellent' three star or 'good' two star rating and only 3% of all the 24,370 providers have a poor rating.

CSCI Chairperson Dame Denise Platt said: 'These quality ratings reward the best providers with the recognition they deserve. They are also an incentive for the poorest to improve, or risk losing business in a competitive marketplace.'

She said that she expected local councils that check providers' quality ratings before purchasing care from them.

Martin Green, chief executive of English Community Care Association, said: 'Where providers feel they have been unfairly judged we hope that CSCI will investigate these issues swiftly and, if necessary, amend the star ratings.'
