Primary Care Trusts are to rebranded simply as 'NHS' in a bid to encourage people to use their services.
This means that, for example, Lambeth PCT will be renamed as 'Lambeth NHS'.
The Department of Health said that the move would help the patients and public to 'recognise the full range of NHS services.'
A Department of Health spokesperson said: 'As well as seeking to strengthen recognition of services provided by the NHS, we also want to reinforce the central role that Primary Care Trusts have in providing services for the local community by giving them the freedom to re-name as NHS Local.
'The guidance is clear that changing branding to the new identity should not happen overnight, but incrementally for instance as new supplies of stationery are needed and property signage is updated.'
