NMC assessment to look at equality

A report on the NMC will look specifically at whether it is adhering to its policy on diversity and equality, ministers have said.

Health minister Ben Bradshaw said this month that the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence’s annual assessment of the NMC would be extended to look at whether it was ‘fulfilling its statutory functions’.

Last week, Mr Bradshaw said that the government had ensured the assessment report would include a ‘description of the arrangements that the council has put in place to ensure that it adheres to good practice in relation to equality and diversity’. The report findings would be laid before parliament, he told the Commons.

It follows allegations by Jim Devine MP that the NMC had an ingrained culture of ‘bullying and racism’. Its council has strongly and consistently denied this (NT News, 18 March, p2).
