The study included 192 patients who had sterile urine before the intervention, of whom 98 were given an oral dose of ciprofloxacin 500mg an hour before the urodymanic investigation. The remaining 94 were not given any prophylactic treatment.

A clean catch mid-stream urine sample was taken 24 hours before the urodynamic studies and another specimen 48-72 hours afterwards.

The rate of significant bacteriuria was 7.3% in all participants, but 1% in the group that received antibiotics compared with 14% in the control group. The most common pathogen was Escherichia coli.
