Infection warning over faulty mattress covers
Nurses have been urged to check special thermo contour mattresses that are designed to prevent the occurrence of pressure ulcers because of a potential infection risk, according to an alert from the government’s medicines and healthcare products watchdog.
Due to a material fault, some Thermo contour mattress covers manufactured by Barrington Healthcare International and supplied by Hill-Rom, have aged prematurely and developed small holes, said the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
This has allowed fluids to pass through and contaminate the mattress’s foam core, posing a potential infection risk to patients.
Staff have been instructed by the MHRA to identify all Thermo contour mattress covers with lot numbers from 3162 to 3626 inclusive.
They should remove the cover and inspect inside the foam core for contamination, said the medical device alert.
Contaminated mattresses and foam cores or damaged covers must be removed from use and replaced and staff should contact Hill-Rom to obtain replacement covers for affected lots
