Nurses evacuated following hospital fire
Nurses were evacuated from their flats yesterday after a fire broke out at a disused building on the site of Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital.
The blaze was first reported in the early evening and was put out just before 10pm by 10 fire engines and two helicopters.
However the blaze caused major traffic disruption and nurses were evacuated from their apartments in neighbouring Broadway Towers as a precaution.
A statement from Belfast Health and Social Care Trust said investigations are underway to discover the cause of the fire.
‘Although there were no injuries and no disruption to hospital services, access to the hospital at the Broadway entrance has been seriously disrupted,’ the statement added.
‘Engineers have assessed the state of the building and informed us that it must be demolished. This will be carried out immediately to minimise traffic disruption at this very busy road junction.
‘Patients and staff using the hospital today should use the Grosvenor Road access.
Access to the site should return to normal by tomorrow, the spokesperson said.
