A quarter of teens binge drink
A quarter of teenagers have admitted to binge drinking on a weekly basis in a survey.
The research by the Trading Standards Institute found that one in four teenagers admitted to consuming five drinks at least once a week.
Furthermore one in 20 drink along, one in six regretted having sex after drinking and half of teenagers said they drink to get drunk.
Findings were based on a survey of 13,000 young people aged 14-17 in the north west of England.
However, the survey also showed that the number of teenagers drinking alcohol at least once a week has fallen from 50% in 2005 to 38% in 2009.
Richard Lindley, chair of the Trading Standards North West Under Age Sales Strategy Group, said: ‘The figures appear to substantiate that the underage sales operations by Trading Standards at retail premises are working. There has been a significant drop since 2007 of young people purchasing alcohol from shops and off-licenses.’
