A&E counselling 'reduces adolescent violence and alcohol abuse'
Brief counselling for adolescents in emergency departments can reduce peer violence and alcohol misuse, according to a 12 month US study.
Researchers studied 726 patients aged 14 to 18 who visited an emergency department between 12pm and 11pm. Patients were randomised to a control group receiving a brochure, or one of two receiving a 35-minute brief intervention delivered by either a computer or therapist.
Teenagers in the therapist group reported higher reductions in violent incidents and alcohol misuse at follow up than the other groups.
