Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSMidwife cut off baby's finger
An investigation has been launched by hospital officials after a midwife accidentally cut off part of a new-born baby’s finger as she used scissors to sever the umbilical cord.
The parents of Ishika Kainth have received an apology from New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton after surgeons were forced to sew part of her left little finger back on following the incident on May 14.
Cheryl Etches, director of nursing and midwifery at the hospital, said that the accident had been “tragic and regrettable” and confirmed that an independent probe was under way. The midwife involved is not taking part in clinical practice at the moment.
Ms Etches added: “We take patient safety very seriously here and, therefore, we immediately commenced an investigation. It’s clearly important we learn any lessons resulting from this incident.”
Speaking to the Wolverhampton Express and Star, Ishika’s mother Jasvir, 28, of Fordhouses, said: “There was blood everywhere. It has caused my husband and I so much stress. You just do not expect these things to happen. Giving birth is supposed to be one of the most memorable experiences in your life.”

Accidents do happen and I don't know all the circumstances... but this incident is just carelessness.

Absolutely horrified to see the picture of a midwife trying to wash the baby's head over a tap, this is definately a No! No!. Such violation should stop immediately.
