A midwife is helping to run a course for new mums that both promotes breast feeding, and encourages women into higher education.
The ‘Breast buddies’ course, run by the University of Greenwich’s School of Health and Social Care as part of the Sure Start scheme, promotes the benefits of breast feeding to new mothers in Gravesend, Kent.
The programme teaches mothers who have breast fed to share their experiences and encourage others to breast feed, while teaching volunteers about the anatomy and physiology of lactation.
All volunteers on the course collect credits from the University of Greenwich, which can be put towards a degree.
The women are guided through their studies by midwife Karen Younes, who is studying for an MA in professional practice health and social care at the university.
Ms Younes said her studies had helped improve engagement with families who found it difficult to access healthcare.
‘Gaining this accreditation with the university gives greater kudos to the value of breastfeeding and mothering,’ she said.
