Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSPost-partum haemorrhage bleed levels unaffected by misoprostol
Researchers have found similar bleed levels in post-partum haemorrhage regardless of whether or not the drug misoprostol was used in conjunction with uterotonics.
The study followed 1422 women to see what difference, if any, the drug made when used in conjunction with uterotonics.
The proportion of women with blood loss of 500 ml or more was identical between the misoprostol and placebo group, both at 14%.
Study scientists said, however, that the drug may still be useful in regions where uterotonics are unavailable.
“The results of this large trial show no benefit of misoprostol in addition to standard injectable uterotonics for the treatment of post-partum haemorrhage,” they explained.
Any further research on misoprostol should focus on the possible effectiveness of misoprostol in settings where standard uterotonics are not available.”
