Staff at a hospital in South Yorkshire have designed a special simulation suit to help training in moving and handling obese patients.
The suit was the idea of Janet Scott, Deputy Manual Handling Manager at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Ms Scott had become concerned about the steady increase in the number of obese patients, meaning that staff face a range of problems when caring for them.
Moving and handling these patients requires particular skills and training is difficult because staff need to experience the problems they may encounter in a realistic manner.
The hospital’s sewing room staff, Denise Briggs and Susan Meakin made a small prototype suit, then created a full-size suit to be worn by an adult.
The suit will help staff experience handling a person of between 125-190kg (20-30 stones) and give them the confidence to move and handle them safely.
