One in five New Year's babies obese by primary school
The public health minister has launched a new health campaign after warning that one in five babies born on New Year’s Day could be obese by the time they start primary school.
Public health minister Gillian Merron has urged parents to give their baby a healthy start in life, and revealed that more than 300 of the estimated 1,500 Scottish babies born on January 1 could grow to be overweight or obese.
Ms Merron said: “Unless we take action, one in five babies likely to be born this New Year’s Day could be obese by the time they start school. What happens in the first years of a baby’s life has a big effect on how healthy they are in the future.
“That is why the Government is launching its Start4Life campaign, which will support pregnant women and parents of babies and give their families a good start for a healthier life.”
The campaign aims to give advice to new parents, and assist them in making healthier choices for their newborn by focusing on six ‘building blocks of life, which includes information on breastfeeding.
