Research predicts 80% of men will be overweight by 2020
Obesity among adults is expected to rise sharply by 2020, when as many as eight out of 10 men and almost seven in 10 women will be overweight, research has shown.
The research, led by professor Klim McPherson from Oxford University, made the prediction after analysing data from 1993 to 2007. It said that by 2020, 41% of men aged 20 to 65 will be obese and 40% will be overweight. The research also showed that 36% of women will be obese and 32% will be overweight 10 years from now.
The figures update predictions made in a 2007 Foresight report - based on data from 1993 to 2004.
However, the researchers also said that there had been a reduction in childhood obesity.
The study said: “Unlike the recent report on child obesity, which showed some indications of a plateauing or at least a significant reduction in the rate of obesity, the future projections for adults are less optimistic.”
